Skilled Manpower Shortage, a Growing Worry!

Entire Indian wood panel & plywood, decorative laminates, doors, WPC/PVC, furniture and kitchen manufacturing sectors are adding to their production capacity year on year. Report says that more than 200 plywood presses are being added in ply, MDF and Particle manufacturing capacity is growing, HPL and WPC on the same way apart from addition of various next generation engineered doors units. Furniture and kitchen sectors are also expanding their production capacity etc but all are ignoring a big issue. Do the companies know that how and from where would they find skilled manpower for smooth running of their operation. Data suggests that the entire wood panel, decorative and PVC sector are making big losses may be in tune of 300-400 cr annually due to shortage of skilled manpower and lacking of able technical heads. Increasing production of B-grade materials, growing overhead cost and under utilization of installed capacity is good enough to justify the numbers.

Arrival of Bagasse Brings Smile to Particle Board

With start of Sugarcane harvesting season, the supply of Baggase has started arriving to Particle Board industry located in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Particle Board producers are in hurry forgetting access to raw materials and stocking as much possible. The hurry is creating a price rise in bagasse raw material segment in Gujarat.

It is noted that production at particle board plants is on almost halt from last two months because of non-availability of sugarcane waste (baggase) for making boards. Gujarat based Particle Board producers hope that supply of finished board will be smoother after mid of November and thus they have started taking new orders.

Be Alert, Timber Shortage to Loom Over 2019-20

Hundreds of new units and presses in North India and another hundreds are planning to expand after easing up in law by central government for setting up new wood based manufacturing unit in “Haryana, Punjab, UP, Rajasthan etc” is certainly going to create a survival crisis for those who are entering in unplanned way. 3000 cbm a day capacity in MDF & Particle Boards manufacturing are also announced or in a way to begin production is adding to the timber requirement which looks already suffocated.

We have seen the situation happened with Baggase based Particle Board Industry in Gujarat, which was almost shut down due to non-availability of raw material since 75 days. You can easily calculate the cost of investment for setting up a particle board manufacturing unit and the loss a producer have had incurred due to the shut down period. Such losses might not be compensated to the company even if they run smoothly for next three hundred days.

Chinese Highlighter Panels Losing Charm Due to Crowded and Competitive Offerings

The market sentiment for ‘cheap and imported highlighters’ is getting weak due to huge flow of designer panels and lack of exclusivity. There are many new players and importers who are now offering designer panels in Mumbai, Delhi and even in other metros that has led to a reduction on margins. The prices offered by importers are much lesser compared to that of a year ago due to rise in number of suppliers. “The highlighter panels of similar materials and designs have become a common choice for each new display showroom hence at the end. “It offers similar concept and similar look,” this is a common statement being made by showroom owners. The showrooms of metro cities are showing desperation to differentiate themselves from new showrooms which are bringing same materials. That is why the leading showroom players are giving lesser wall space to such highlighter panels. The common reply is “because of very common designs and same pricing everywhere the choice of exclusiveness is not there” and display of China range is common with every retailer, hence designer community is drifting from it.

A period of hope & despair !

The plywood laminate and timber markets are still struggling even after 2 months of GST implementation. ‘Sales are weak, payments are not coming and uncertainty looms everywhere, be it for a manufacturer or a dealer’.

The sales in plywood have seen a massive drop of around 35-40 percent from its levels recorded in Feb-March 17. Timber suppliers are not much happy either. Touble faced by small retailers and traders and their complaints to the new GST law is genuine because it is giving them sleepless nights. Particle Board and MDF sales are at average level but that too is based on discounting support. The sales in decorative laminates are down by 20-25 percent. You may come across few people who claim, they are not that affected which is mainly due to addition of new stockist in every region and the sales are largely primary.

Hundreds of New Plywood Units: Boom Time or Trouble Ahead ?

Haryana Forest Department has granted new licences for plywood, veneer, block board and door making units and released 1680 new licences last month. Issuing of new licences for plywood industries has opened the blocked path to start new plywood units in the region after one and half decade. The Forest department has issued the list of successful applicants and selected new licensees have to deposit their licence fee for formal issuance of final licence.
In a survey done by the government in September 2016, it was observed that wood supply was 10 percent higher than the last year. The Haryana Poplar Safeda Growers Sangharsh Samiti had been struggling since long to convince the government for taking measures to prevent the falling prices of plantation wood. The prices of poplar have come down by 200 percent during last two years thus forcing farmers to uproot poplar plants and stop plantation.
